Support for Migrants, Refugees and Asylum Seekers

Please find below information about how you can help those affected by the humanitarian crisis in the Ukraine.  This webpage also includes a directory of wider services available to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The Humanitarian Crisis in the Ukraine

The Chorley and District Support for Ukraine group are collecting and coordinating the transportation of donations for Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war. For more information on how you can help and what items are being collected please visit the Facebook group.

You can also make a financial donation to support those affected by the humanitarian crisis in the Ukraine via the Governments' Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Appeal.  

If you would like to donate items to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers already living in Chorley, we kindly ask that you contact us so that we can let you know what items are needed at the time of your enquiry.  Please email us at communities@chorley.gov.uk for more information.

Homes for Ukraine Scheme

Applying to the Scheme

UK individuals, charities, community groups and businesses can now record their interest in supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war through the government's new Homes for Ukraine scheme.  Phase One of the scheme opened on 18 March for visa applications from Ukrainian applicants who have named people in the UK willing to sponsor them.  People wanting to be sponsors who do not know anyone personally fleeing Ukraine can also record their interest in being a sponsor. You can record your interest as an individual or as an organisation (for example charity, business, community group).

There are many things to consider when signing up to the scheme and a checklist (PDF) [62KB] issued by Lancashire County Council will help you make an informed decision.  Lancashire County Council have also launched a Facebook page which provides practical information for anyone in Lancashire wanting to offer their home or spare room under the scheme.

The government will be working closely with charities and other organisations to ensure that people who want to help are matched to people from Ukraine.  There are currently a number of charities who are asking people to register their interest with them.  Some of these include:

Service Directory for Migrants, refugees and asylum seekers

Drop in support session

The drop in provides a support, advice and signposting services for refugees and asylum seekers in Chorley. The drop-in runs alongside The Meeting Place, a group-based session which is aims to tackle social isolation.

There is no need to book an appointment and there is the promise of a warm welcome, refreshments and help with a range of issues including accommodation, benefits, learning English, connecting with other asylum seekers and refugees and a chance to join in with the Meeting Place activities including gardening, arts and crafts, woodwork and more.

The drop in takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays 10am till 12pm.

Help with housing

Chorley Council's Housing Solutions team can provide help and advice if someone is experiencing problems with a housing situation or if someone needs support with looking for a new home to rent or buy in Chorley.  Please see our housing webpages for more information. 

 

Asian Women's Forum

The Asian Women's Forum can work with asylum seeking and refugee families in Chorley to enhance learning, employability and mental health prospects.

Lancashire Refugee Council

The Refugee Council work directly with thousands of refugees each year. They support refugees from the moment they arrive in the UK and provide crisis advice, practical support and help people integrate into their communities.  They also offer mental health counselling to help refugees come to terms with the traumas that so many have experienced.

British Red Cross

Refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants can get free emergency support from the British Red Cross.  They can provide an interpreter if a person does not speak English and they have no political or religious affiliations. Support can include:

  • access to food
  • small amounts of cash
  • clothes
  • toiletries
  • blankets
  • baby items

The support the British Red Cross can offer also depends on an individuals or family's location.  Help could also include:

  • reuniting with family
  • travel vouchers
  • benefits and career advice
  • help registering with a doctor or dentist
  • Attending appointments with service users
  • learning about life in the UK
  • getting to know the local area
  • counselling

Migrant Help Helpline

Migrant Help exist to protect people affected by displacement and exploitation, helping them thrive as individuals and recover from their trauma. They support those most in need and least likely to find support elsewhere, whilst aiming to bridge community gaps and bring services and support together.

Those seeking asylum in the UK can seek help with applying for accommodation and financial support, can report issues with asylum accommodation and access any other advice needed during their asylum journey.

They also provide support during the post-decision period, regardless of whether the decision has been positive or negative.

We are People First advocacy service

We are People First support thousands of people every year to have their voices heard and help them to live their best lives.  They can support refugees to:

  • make NHS complaints
  • get access to interpreters
  • support to find local dentists

Citizens Advice

Citizens Advice can offer a range of support services around immigration, debt and benefits, energy budgeting, consumer advice, employment, education and health care.

This service is available to adults aged 19 years and above and 18 year olds who are not in employment, education or training.

Progress Futures

Progress Futures is a free service that helps individuals access training, apprenticeships and employment support to improve people's job prospects and help them achieve their goals.  To be eligible to access this service, individuals must be unemployed, be on a zero-hour contract or be inactive (not claiming benefits and not working). Individuals must also have one of the following objectives: Employment, education/training or volunteering. 

Support available includes:

  • one to one weekly, fortnightly, or monthly support via telephone, email, text, online or face to face (key worker discretion and social distancing guidelines apply)
  • individualised action plans that assess need and barriers to employment
  • Zoom job clubs
  • information, advice and guidance on benefits, housing, training and more
  • specialist advice from the financial inclusion team
  • work experience, volunteering placements and apprenticeships
  • discretionary financial support for childcare, interview clothing and
    travel costs
  • job searching
  • CV and covering letter writing
  • writing application forms
  • interview preparation

Ingeus

The Work and Health programme provides support for unemployed people with health conditions or disabilities. It is also designed to help those individuals who have been out of work for a long time as well as those who might need some specialist support.

Support available includes:

  • a dedicated Key Worker for the duration of the programme
  • access to support from a regional team of Health Practitioners and Educators who can provide advice and deliver sessions on aspects of mental and physical health where it might not be available locally, or there is a long waiting list
  • access to a diverse range of support services that can help address concerns with health, life, skills and work
  • specialist support where required, for example translation or signing services
  • help with housing, money, relationships,skills and training, mental health, physical health, addiction and more
  • assistance with joining a group or picking up an old or new hobby.

To be eligible for this programme, individuals should be unemployed, but with the ambition to find paid work within the next 12 months.
