Owner in residential care Council Tax exemption

If a property is left unoccupied because the person(s) previously living there has moved into a nursing, care home or hospital, you can apply for an exemption from Council Tax.

The dwelling can be exempt regardless of whether it is furnished or unfurnished and will qualify for the exemption while the person whose name appears on the bill is residing in residential care.

You will need to provide us with the following information:

  • the date the property became unoccupied
  • the address of the residential care home, nursing home, or hospital 
  • if you would like us to correspond with a family member, friend or solicitor please provide their details.
